Marian Haf

Marian graduated as a Fine Art Painting graduate from the University of Gloucestershire, Cheltenham in 2004 and is now settled back home in West Wales raising her family. Marian first started printmaking in 2010 when she joined her local print group ‘Printers in the Sticks’. As her children are getting older, she is increasingly finding the time to develop her practice.

Marian’s work can be varied in subject matter but often has a common narrative of nostalgia and melancholy - memories of fishing with her father and siblings, the discarded toys of her own children and the heritage and tradition of Welsh quilt work.

Collagraphs have become a firm favourite of Marian’s as she feels a quality akin to charcoal drawing, a tactility, a freedom in the mark making by tearing the layers which result in beautiful tonal depths, these then punctuated with sharp lines and staccato dots.

Marian’s recent prints often consist of many smaller collagraph plates that make a compositional patchwork which are laid intuitively, without overthinking, looking for that happy accident that is presented in the reveal.
