Nigel Lambert

Since his days as a student in Cornwall Nigel has had a longstanding interest in Earthenware, from the majestic thrown and slipped chargers of 17th century potter Thomas Toft, to the soft warmth of Southern European cookware. Although rooted in English traditions he believes in making pots that have relevance to our lives today.

Since setting up his workshop in the Forest of Dean in 1990, he has held many joint and solo exhibitions throughout the world. In 1990 he was the youngest person to be elected a full member of the Craft Potters Association; exhibiting in their London gallery on a regular basis, including a solo show in 1996. He has exhibited internationally including a British Council Touring exhibition in South America, ‘European Slipware’ in Tegelan, Netherlands, Galerie Du Dom, France, International Woodfired Tableware exhibition, Tasmania, Australia.

Throughout his time of making pots he has been drawn to the work of Roger Hilton, Terry Frost, Patrick Heron and other artists from the Cornish peninsula, they have influenced the decorative marks he makes using Cobalt oxide on white clay slip. Taking these influences, he approaches his work not as a painter, but as a potter.

The pots he makes are fired in a large woodfired kiln which is fuelled with softwood off-cuts, this method of firing is un-predictable and challenging, ash and flames adding that extra quality to the finished glaze.

Recent developments with low fired red Japanese enamel have enabled Nigel to add an extra layer of visual depth to the decoration.

Nigel established his first workshop in Bristol in 1987, this lasted until 1990 when he moved to the Forest of Dean, where he currently lives and works.

Nigel’s work is held in many public and private collections. He has exhibited widely in England, Europe and Australia and was elected a fellow of the Craft Potters Association in 1990. He was elected to the council of the CPA in 2013.
