Dominic Powell
Dominic calls himself a blacksmith, woodworker, artist, sculptor, Welshman.
Dominic uses his skill in hot metal forging to create artworks that explore modern Welsh identity and the changing landscape of Wales in the 21st Century. Working with the traditional form of the Welsh Love Spoon, Dominic was charmed by the symbolic icons carved into the spoons, messages from the maker to the recipient (often a suitor to his beloved). With a desire to encapsulate this method of symbolic communication in a modern idiom to express ideas about his homeland, Dominic turned to the universal language of maps. He has selected places of autobiographical importance to him (Cardiff Bay, Pen-y-Fan, Worms’ Head – Rhossili) and transposed the map marks to plate steel using a variety of compression techniques to produce works that are both specific to place and of abstract material beauty.

In our window we are showing his Pen y Fan Chair but also the backs of two future chairs, depicting Cardiff Bay & Worms Head alongside two of his love spoons. Please do get in touch if you would like to know more about his work.
